שרגא פביאן הרשקוביץ (בודפשט 1907 - ישראל 1982) Shraga Fabian Herskovitz ( born Budapest 1907 - died Israel 1982)

מורה ורב. את תואר הדוקטור קיבל בפקולטה לפילוסופיה של אוניברסיטת בודפשט ובסמינר לרבנים. בשנות השלושים לימד באוניברסיטת רומא ובתל אביב.

החל מ-1941 שימש כרב בבודפשט, והיה חבר הנהלת "בית הזכוכית".

ב-1947 עוטר באות של הרפובליקה ההונגרית.

ב-1949 עזב את הונגריה וניהל את המחלקה לתרבות בעיריית תל אביב. 

Fabian Herskovitz was a great teacher who received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Budapest Rabbinical Seminary. In the 1930's he taught at the University of Rome and Tel Aviv. Starting in 1941 he served as a rabbi in Budapest, and was a member of the management of the "Glass House". In 1947 he was honored and decorated by the Republic of Hungary for his role in saving thousands of Jews. In 1949 he left Hungary, moved to Israel and became the director of the Cultural Department of the Tel Aviv Municipality.

יונה אקשטיין היה חבר פעיל ומוכר בקהילה היהודית ומתאבק מצליח במועדון הספורט היהודי "הכוח". העיסוק הספורטיבי הקנה לו חברים ומכרים רבים, בין היתר בקרב אנשי הפקידות והמשטרה. קשרים אלה סייעו לו כעבור שנים בפעילות ההצלה. פעילותו הענפה נגעה באלפי אנשים, התפרסה על גבי תקופה ארוכה וכללה פעולות רבות ומגוונות אשר סיכנו את חייו ואת חיי משפחתו.

הוא ניצל את אישור השלטונות שניתן לו לחלוקת מזון ליהודים עצורים כדי להעביר באופן חשאי אוכל ומידע חיוני ליהודים ששהו במסתור; אירח יתומים עזובים שהגיעו מפולין וסייע לעלייתם לארץ; אירח יהודים שברחו לסלובקיה מאושוויץ; סייע ליהודים להימלט להונגריה והסתיר יהודים בשני בונקרים - כולל אחד שחפר מתחת למרתף ביתו שלו; 

יונה אקשטיין עמד בעינויי הגסטאפו ובלחץ המוסדות היהודיים ולא הסגיר יהודים מוסתרים.

סיפור הצלתם של יהודים רבים על ידי יונה אקשטיין היה ידוע לאורך השנים בקרב יוצאי ברטיסלבה ובני משפחתו בלבד. כדרכם של מצילים רבים יונה אקשטיין מיעט לדבר לאחר השואה על תרומתו להצלת יהודים ופרטים רבים נותרו עלומים עד היום. רבות מהפעולות שעשה יונה אקשטיין נעשו במסגרת הפעילות המאורגנת של הקהילה היהודית ו"קבוצת העבודה" בראשות הרב מיכאל דב ויסמנדל וגיזי פליישמן, אך את עיקר הפעולות עשה בעצמו ומיוזמתו.

Yona Eckstein was an active member in the Jewish community and a successful wrestler in Jewish sports clubs. Participation in sports earned him many powerful friends and acquaintances, among others among bureaucrats and police. These connections helped him years later in the rescue of Jewish people, spread over a long period and included many activities that endangered his and his family's life.

Authorities' approval was given for food distribution to the Jewish detainees and he got essential information for Jews in hiding; He hosted abandoned orphans from Poland and assisted immigration to Israel; Slovakia assisted Jews who escaped from Auschwitz; he helped Jews escape to Hungary and hid two Jews - including one who dug under the basement of his house.

The rescue of many Jews by Yona Eckstein was only known over the years among immigrants from Bratislava and their families. In the manner of many rescuers, Eckstein did not talk much about his brave contribution during the Holocaust to save Jews and many details remain unknown to this day. Many of the organized activities done by Eckstein for the Jewish community in Bratislava, done with Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandel and Gisi Fleischmann, but the most important actions he had done himself at his own risk.

שומלו שנדור (הדוד שומלו) Somlo Sandor (Uncle Somlo)

שומלו שנדור, בן למשפחה עניה בהונגריה, שלא זכה להשכלה פורמלית, אך בעל כשרון, מרץ ויוזמה בלתי נדלים, שבזכותם הפך לאחד מגדולי סיטונאי המזון בהונגריה. אולם ייחודו הנעלה ביותר היה נדיבותו המסורה לנוער החלוצי. יהודי שומר מצוות שהפך לידיד השומר הצעיר מראשית קיומה, סייע לפלוגות ההכשרה ולכל פעולות התנועה. 

בעוון תרומתו להברחת פליטי סלובקיה נאסר ביחד עם שמחה הונוולד וחבריו ורכש את אהדת כל האסירים הגויים בכלא בעממיותו וארגון הספקת מזון עבורם. 

עם הפלישה הנאצית הוא מקדיש את כל מרצו לצבירת מחסני מזון להזנת הגטאות ובתי החסות, תוך הסתכנות מתמדת בעימותים עם השלטונות. אירגן קנית מזון בעיר בודפשט ובערי השדה הקרובות עבור הצלב האדום הבינלאומי - כביכול. הקשר שלו בקניות מצרכי המזון וריכוזם במחסני "הצלב האדום הבינלאומי", היה עם זולטן ויינר ועם אפרה אגמון מהמחלקה הכלכלית של "הצלב האדום הבינלאומי".

Somlo Sandor, son of a poor family in Hungary, did not receive a formal education but with talent, energy and inexhaustible initiative, he became one of the greatest food wholesalers in Hungary

But his uniqueness was the devoted generosity; an observant Jew, he became a member of Hashomer Hatzair in the beginning of its existence, and helped the battalions in all operations. 

His actions to smuggle refugees from Slovakia caused him to be arrested. With the Nazi invasion, he devoted all his energy to accumulate food stores to enter the ghettos and safe houses, risking his life constantly. He organized food bought in from Budapest and in the provinces coming from the International Red Cross - His bond purchased foodstuffs stored in the warehouses of "International Red Cross", which was carried out along with Zoltan Weiner and the Economic Department of the "International Red Cross".
